Ed Evenson Field Camp Scholarship Fund

Thank you for supporting the Ed Evenson Field Camp Scholarship. As you are likely aware, Ed founded the inspiring Lehigh Field Camp, leading it for a duration that spanned four decades. Under his tutelage, skittish students would pack into vans and join the caravan west. Across the Midwest they would scoot, noticing the telltale rise of the plains. Then, the first sight of mountains would electrify the van. Doors would open and boots would scramble. Up the talus and onto the ridge, notebooks in hand, stories would be stitched together by lecture on the outcrop. Beyond this is the personal fiber. Oh my, the character that was built through recurring gales and hails and tents destroyed while you were in them—indeed, there was never any respite from the weather. Geology students were simply not the same people when they returned home.
The vistas of field camp endure etched in our minds, including the spires of the Grand Teton. The steam of Grand Prismatic Spring and the eruption of Old Faithful. The depth of the open pit at the Homestake Gold Mine. The faces of Mount Rushmore. The precipice of Devil’s Tower. The tapering ridges of Fremont Lake. The majesty of Borah Peak and the distance to town from the Copper Basin. Ed assembled a veritable best-of scrapbook of American landscapes. Indeed, he helped expand one’s horizon beyond the wildest of a child’s dreams.

The Evenson scholarship will support an undergraduate enrolling in a geology field camp, with preference given to those engaged with the study of landscape evolution and geomorphic processes, particularly glaciation.
